A Tribute to Christopher: A Life of Purpose and Inspiration
On May 15, my beautiful son came into this world, defying incredible odds and leaving an indelible mark on everyone he touched.
From the moment of his birth, Christopher faced daunting challenges – a congenital heart defect, respiratory failure, and Down syndrome. Many feared for his future, and some even suggested giving up on him. But Christopher was a fighter from the very beginning, refusing to succumb to the bleak predictions that surrounded him.
As he fought for every breath in the ICU, the world seemed indifferent to his struggle. Born in Canada by a twist of fate, his journey to find legal status in America was a 17-year struggle, reflecting the hurdles he faced throughout his life.
Initially advised to reject him, I found myself unprepared and unequipped for the challenges that lay ahead. Little did I know that this child that at first I would have done anything to avoid having, was destined to be a teacher of men, a catalyst for seismic shifts in attitudes towards disability.
His life brought about profound change. He inspired awe-inspiring fundraising events, Magical Forests, Concerts of Love, Camelot Galas and a world-renowned Santa Run. His influence led to the construction of beautiful campuses, a residential community named Betty’s Village, and the donation of billions. He transformed his family into dedicated servants for good, giving us each a purpose beyond imagination.
Christopher’s impact did not end with his passing. His legacy lives on, as the earth seemed to shift on its axis the day he was born. Through his short life, he dispensed goodness day in and day out, leaving a trail of inspiration and hope in his wake through the Christopher Smith Caregiver Foundation.
Every day, this son and brother is remembered and cherished. His presence continues to be felt, and his influence has forever changed the way his community perceives disability. We are eternally grateful for the gift of Christopher, who chose us to be his family.
